The Giver
Title: the Giver
Author: Lois Lowry
Genre: speculative Fiction
In The Giver a boy, Jonas, lives in a perfect community. No war, poverty , or choices. Everyone abides by the rules. Jonas turned twelve and was assigned a special job, Receiver. New ideas, rules, and feelings that Jonas learns make him want change and he is determined to make it happen.
The author, Lois Lowry, wants the reader to understand that a utopia could never really be perfect. I agree with the author. So many sacrifices are made like almost no feelings and no choices. With out these things are we really human? They sure don’t act like one. What is the point of a perfect community if you don’t have feelings to truly love the place you live in?
I enjoyed reading The Giver. I liked how Jonas stood up for what he thought was wrong and was brave enough to break rules and run away. I give The Giver 4 stars. It was an interesting story how the community worked with the ceremonies and way of doing things. I wanted more information about what happened to the community after Jonas left. I recommend this book to anyone in 6th grade and up.
